Guitar Virtuoso Richard Smith at the Colony Café

by Editor

Recognized by some of the world’s finest guitarists as a master of the instrument, Richard Smith takes the stage on Sunday, May 25 at the Colony Café.

Music legend Chet Atkins said, “The most amazing guy I know on guitar. He can play anything I know, only better” And this from Tommy Emmanuel, CGP (two-time Grammy nominee). “If you like my playing, you should hear Richard Smith! The world champion!”

When Richard Smith picks up a guitar, audiences watch in rapt amazement while his fingers dance over fretboard and strings, and listen in delight as melody and groove fill the room. It’s a natural gift. When he was only eleven years old, his hero, the “Godfather” of fingerstyle guitar, Chet Atkins, invited Richard to share the stage with him at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.

Now, with 10 CD releases and a DVD to his name, Richard is well-known for playing a wide range of musical styles using various techniques: Blues, Joplin rags, Gypsy jazz, Beatles songs, Bach, flatpicking fiddle tunes, Sousa marches, fingerstyle jazz and straight country Travis picking tunes make up his evolving repertoire.

This is a rare chance for music enthusiasts in the Hudson Valley to hear a true guitar genius in a small setting. Richard has played with Chet Atkins, Nato Lima, Boots Randolph, Tommy Emmanuel, John Jorgenson, Marcel Dadi, Tommy Tedesco, Thom Bresh, Joe Pass, Biréli Lagrèné, Bryan Sutton, Les Paul, Mark O’Connor, Sam Bush, Martin Taylor, Jorge Morel, Suzy Bogguss, Muriel Anderson, Guy Van Duser, Béla Fleck, Victor Wooten, Tony McManus, Joscho Stephan, Buster B.
