Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes
This week at the Maverick Concert Hall husband and wife, Bill Charlap & Renee Rosnes, team up for a select performance of impassioned, eclectic, and extraordinary piano duets.
Bill Charlap grew up in a musical household, as the son of Broadway songwriter Moose Charlap and singer Sandy Stewart. He has worked with Gerry Mulligan, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Carter, Clark Terry, and Frank Wess, and has been an accompanist for Tony Bennett, Carol Sloane, and Sheila Jordan. Ms. Rosnes is recognized as one of the premier jazz pianists and composers of her generation. She has toured and recorded with many jazz masters, including stints with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Buster Williams, James Moody, Ron Carter, and Bobby Hutcherson, among others. In 2010 Mr. Charlap and Ms. Rosnes released Double Portrait on the Blue Note label. Downbeat magazine wrote of the duo’s recording, “The counterpoint and compatibilities are so perfectly balanced, the selections and arrangements so handsome, that Double Portrait is a prize.”

Andrew Russo and Frederic Chiu
Two Yamaha grands will grace the Maverick stage for the second appearance of Frederic Chiu and Andrew Russo, who thrilled the Maverick audience in 2011.

Frederic Chiu
Chiu was recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and the Petscheck Award of the Juilliard School; he also was the “non-winner” of the 1993 Van Cliburn Competition, where his elimination from the finals caused an uproar in the press. He has released more than 20 recordings, which have received accolades such as “Record of the Year” by Stereo Review and “Top 10 recordings” by the New Yorker.

Andrew Russo
Russo, nominated for a Grammy for his recording of music by John Corigliano, was a finalist in the 2001 Van Cliburn Competition. He’s director of music at Le Moyne College and created Music Journeys Inc., a nonprofit youth educational foundation. At one time he studied with Chiu.
