Through 10/21: hudson River School Trilogy: a focused Collection; drawings from dia; selections from the permanent Collection at the Frances lehman loeb art Center, Vassar College, Poughkeepsie— The Hudson River School of painters, an outgrowth of the Romantic Movement, was a dominant school of landscape painting in the 19th century, whose influence is still felt even today. For this exhibition, Vassar dips into its private collection, as well as those of Maryann (Vassar ‘55) and Alvin Friedman, and the Dia Art Foundation. Evocative works by Frederic Edwin Church, Sanford Gifford, and Jasper Francis Cropsey are featured. If you’ve ever wondered what all the fuss about the Hudson River School was about, this is your chance to find out. 124 Raymond Ave, http://fllac.vassar.edu, 845.437.5632.

9/7 through 10/8: Craig J. Barber’s “boheMia” at Gallerie BMG, woodstock— Over the last 20 years, photographer (and Woodstock resident) Craig J. Barber has been traveling around the world (and the Catskills, too) examining rapidly changing cultures, creating bodies of works he refers to as “cultural landscapes,” and documenting them using platinum and palladium printing techniques. His recent BOHEMIA collection focuses on Prague, Czech Republic, and its surrounding countryside, reflecting the shifting cultural transitions while maintaining a vague sense of looking in on it from a distance. 12 Tannery Brook Rd., www.galeriebmg.com, 845.679.0027.

9/8 through 10/8: RobeRt ferrucci, “vanishing landsCape” at River winds gallery, beacon— Best described as Contemporary American Folk Artist, Ferricci paints using muted earth tones, his landscapes of barns, farms, and country life suggest a nostalgic melancholy, a strange quiet serenity. With an open, almost Impressionistic style, he captures the essential flavor of New York farm country, as well as other distinctly American locations. 172 Main St., www.riverwindsgallery.com, 845.838.2880.

Time and Space for New Orleans, Time and Space Limited, Hudson— Already the second anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and still so much of New Orleans lies in ruin. Time and Space Limited keep this travesty front and center where it belongs with a month-long exploration of this untenable situation. The TSL Gallery will be showing a photography exhibit of those who stayed behind by Louisianian Tom Neff, along with a 14-minute video collage by Dennis Couvillion through 10/1. On Sa 9/14, two documentaries, Kamp Katrina and Big Easy to Big Empty will show (7:30 PM).
