Music Highlights
SAT
11/17: OLU DARA, CLUB HELSINKI, Great Barrington Ma- With one foot in
his native Mississippi Delta, and the other in NYC avant-garde jazz,
and everything else covering the world of musical possibilities, Olu
Dara comes back for the 8th anniversary of Club Helsinki in high style.
An accomplished trumpeter, notably with Art Blakey, David Murray, and
Henry Threadgill, he astonished his audience by adding in guitar and
vocals, recently singing alongside Cassandra Wilson on his new release
Neighborhoods. With his full band, he’s been known to keep the
house rocking late, and oh yes, he is the father of hip-hop superstar
Nas. 9 PM
SUN 11/11: GARAGE RUMBLE, Bearsville theater, woodstock- Kristen Garnier,
having been impressed by an Onteora High School battle of the bands,
saw some major talent developing at the local high school level and
was inspired. In tandem with 100.1 WDST Radio Woodstock, Nevessa Productions,
Poughkeepsie Live, SWR Amps, and Jackson Guitars, the Rumble is back
at Bearsville Theater for its 3rd year, with a repeat performance from
last year’s winner Lemonade Grenade. This years panelists: Platinum
songwriter Donna Lewis; Allaire studio manager Mark McKenna; chillMedia
NORTH promoter Elissa Jane Mastel; Frank McGinnis, lead singer and guitarist
from Frankie and His Fingers; and Chronogram music editor (and contributing
writer for Roll) Peter Aaron. 3-8 PM
SAT 12/1: sonny landreth w/ Matt rae trio, towne crier, Pawling- Guitar
lovers have a lot to celebrate this month at the Towne Crier, with Jim
Weider’s Project Percolator on 11/24, and Arlen Roth on 12/7,
but if you haven’t already, you owe it to yourself to experience
the uncanny Sonny Landreth. Softspoken, with a slightly adenoidal Louisiana
drawl, Landreth coaxes impossibly perfect sounds from his electric slide
guitar. John Hiatt, John Mayall, and Marshall Crenshaw are among those
who have called for his mighty axe, and if that’s not good enough
reason to check him out, go ahead, stay home for all I care. No, really.
9 PM
SAT 11/24: JOHN ABERCROMBIE and ANDY LAVERNE AT ADAM SPACE, shokan-
A few years back, good friends guitarist John Abercrombie and pianist
Andy LaVerne recorded the well-received concert DVD “The Art of
the Duo.” Abercrombie, whose illustrious history includes stints
with the Brecker Bros., Billy Cobham, and Jack DeJohnette, as well as
several memorable duos with Ralph Towner, is versatile on both electric
and acoustic guitar. LaVerne is a stellar jazz educator as well as sideman
for a veritable Who’s Who of jazz: Frank Sinatra, Stan Getz, Dizzy
Gillespie, to name but a few. Jazz lovers should make the Rte. 28 run
for this one. 3091 Rte. 28, www.adamspiano.com,

FRI 11/16: roy BookBinder at the rosendale café, rosendale- Though
the Rosendale Café has great music every Saturday (the first
two Saturdays of December are particularly spicy, with The Powderkegs
w/ Chris O’Brien on 12/1, and The Blue Ribbon Boys on 12/8), Roy
Bookbinder is a must-see in November. Having learned the blues from
none other than the Rev. Gary Davis, Bookbinder is an amazing guitarist
and songwriter (Peter, Paul, and Mary struck gold with his “If
I Had My Way”) who’s toured with Bonnie Raitt, JJ Cale,
and Hot Tuna, so make a night of it at the intimate Rosendale Café,
and get there early for some great vegetarian food. www.rosendalecafe.com,
