November Art Highlights

FRI 12/7: EIGHTH ANNUAL“5 x 7” SHOW AT KLEINERT/JAMES ART CENTER, WOODSTOCK- This increasingly popular local fundraiser is back for its eighth season. For those uninitiated, artists of all levels, styles, techniques, and fame (both national and international) donate an original work, unsigned, on a small 5” by 7” canvas. Each piece is then sold for $100, and we’re told that it’s pretty exciting when the doors are finally opened, and waiting art lovers fan out looking for gems…only post-selection does one know which artist they got. The pieces then stay exhibited through 11/23, and all proceeds go to the Kleinert/James Exhibition Program of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild. Kleinert/James Arts Center, 34 Tinker St., www.woodstockguild.org, 845.679.2079, Reception Fr 12/7, 5-7 PM

SAT/SUN 12/1,2: TIVOLI UNITED CRAFT AND ART IN TIVOLI- To quote the press release, “The primary impetus behind the creation of this event is the need its participants see for the return, as a society, to an appreciation for finely executed, handmade objects. There is and will always remain a profound difference between that which is handcrafted by a neighbor, over hours or days
and those goods that have, well, not.” Art prints, cards, screen-printed items, handspun yarn, woodwork, silver, needlework, sculpture, digital art, and “artisanal foods” will be available for purchase, and makes for a nice reason to hang out in Tivoli for a day. 10 Montgomery St. (old garage just south of the red barn), contact Melissa Halvorson at spinninganddyeing@yearofthegoat.biz, or

11/17 THROUGH 1/12/08: FRANK FAULKNER: CRITICAL MASS AT TERENCHIN FINE ART, CATSKILL- Beginning Nov. 17, the Terenchin Fine Art will be devoted to a work in progress: a series of male genital drawings by Hudson’s Frank Faulkner. The models are exclusively Hudson Valley residents from all walks of life, and identified with initials only. The show functions as a preview. At an unspecified
time, the project concludes with the publication of a bound edition featuring over 100 images from the series. Part two of the show opens Dec. 14. The drawings are replaced by new landscape work. Combined, the shows present an overview of Faulkner's recent experiments with explicitly figurative and representational imagery. Reception Sa 11/17, 6-9 PM, gallery open Mo-Sa 1-6 PM 462 Main St., Catskill, 518.943.5312

THROUGH 2/24/08: SAUL STEINBERG: ILLUMINATIONS, At the FRANCES LEHMAN LOEB ART CENTER At VASSAR, POUGHKEEPSIE- Though Saul Steinberg’s work has been prominently displayed to the public eye on the pages and covers of the New Yorker, there is much that has never been seen before in this grand retrospective of his work. To quote the curator of this exhibit, (and author of the 2005 book Steinberg at the New Yorker ) Joel Smith, “Saul Steinberg’s last American museum retrospective, in 1978, reflected the priorities of a living artist who wanted to be sure the public saw his career as that of a focused, museum-worthy artist. To look at Steinberg’s career in its full duration, depth, and variety is to catch a close-up view of the energies and contradictions of the twentieth century.” Illuminations is the first full-scale review of Steinberg’s work, covering the 1930s through the 1990s. 124 Raymond Ave., Poughkeepsie, fllac.vassar.edu, 845.437.5632
