June Theatre & Cinema Highlights
6/20 through 7/13- SEDITION, by David Wiltse, at Shadowland Theatre, Ellenville. Being openly in favor of non-aggression and neutrality during war fever has never been easy in this country. Sedition sets this story of a young German teacher at the University of Nebraska during the run-up to America’s involvement with World War I, around the time the Sedition Act of 1918 was passed, making it a crime to speak out against the war. David Wiltse had success with this creative team with The Good German (2006), and this production, in conjunction with the Playwright’s Theater of New Jersey, will be its New York premiere. Shadowland Theatre, 157 Canal St., Ellenville, www.shadowlandtheatre.org, 845.647.5511. Th/Fr/Sa: 8 PM; Su 2 PM
Th 6/19 through Su 6/22- UP THE YANGTZE (cinema) at Time and Space Limited, Hudson. In China, it is simply known as "The River." But the Yangtze—and all of the life that surrounds it—is undergoing a truly astonishing transformation wrought by the largest hydroelectric project in history, the Three Gorges Dam. Canadian documentary filmmaker Yung Chang returns to the gorgeous, now-disappearing landscape of his grandfather’s youth to trace the surreal life of a "farewell cruise" that traverses the gargantuan waterway, giving a human dimension to the wrenching changes facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large. With a humanist gaze and wry wit, Chang’s “Upstairs/Downstairs” approach beautifully captures the microcosmic society of the luxury liner: poor below, rich above, all in the same boat.
