Why Wait for Wedding Cake?
by Gary Allen
The gown and cake, virginally white, were designed to reassure the groom’s family that potential children would carry only the bride and groom’s family genes. Essentially, the cake is a symbolic bride and, when the couple makes the first cut of the cake, they metaphorically consummate their marriage.
One of my students, on hearing this, suggested that — under all that white frosting — should be a red velvet cake. While that highly suggestive cake might be just a bit too literal, she had answered my original question (why wait for the cake?); it would be indelicate to consummate a marriage with cake before all the legal and/or religious requirements have been met.
