July Art Highlights


Art Along the Hudson-The Hudson Valley region is fortunate to have excellent cooperation between arts organizations. Four in particular: Arts Society of Kingston (ASK), Beacon Arts Community Association (BACA), Poughkeepsie Weekend on Main, and the River Art Walk of Newburgh (RAW), have joined forces to create Art Along the Hudson, which focuses on each town in succession, with receptions, openings, music, theatre, and dining experiences. Bard- Hessel Museum of Art- The first North American survey of the work of British artist Martin Creed comes to Bard this summer. Creed seems to delight in the odd juxtaposition of simple, sometimes literarily throwaway objects, over a variety of generally neutral spaces. Working through a variety of mediums, Creed pushes boundaries and buttons. CCS Bard Presents “Feelings”, We- Su, 7/7 thru 9/16, Opening 7/7, 5-7:30 PM; Martin Creed and Band gives a bonus show at the Spiegeltent 7/7, 8:30 PM. Art Society of Kingston-The Kingston Sculpture Biennial is firing up all around the city of Kingston, as 45 artists start installing 50 sculptures into its parks, storefront windows, and interior spaces, notably the main gallery of the Arts Society of Kingston, the Livingroom Gallery on N. Front St., and the former Ulster County Jail on Golden Hill. Performance artist Linda Montano performs a special 7 hour event at the former jail on Sa 7/7, from noon to 7 PM. Main gallery at A.S.K opens at 1 PM, featuring works by Mimi Czjaka Graminski, Lyndon Preston, Raquel Rabinovich, and Pamela Wallace, with reception at 5 PM. Van Brunt Gallery, Beacon- A exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by the Psychedelic Furs’ lead singer/songwriter (and area resident) Richard Butler. A graduate of the Epsom School of Art and Design (UK) before world stardom, Butler has returned to his paintbrushes with renewed passion, with is much evident in this collection. Paintings by Michael Ricardo Andreev, and digitally altered photographs by David Baratt. 7/7- 8/6, reception Sa 7/21, 6-9 PM. John Davis Gallery, Hudson- Following in the footsteps of reknowned father Theodore, Sara Jane Roszak has developed a distinct dontemporary style, frequently mixing pastel chalk and and water-based media to acheive often unpredictable results. With Sergio Sericolo and Wilson Mclean, thru 7/15. Jon Isherwood’s marble sculpture has a skin-like organic quality, achieved by various hi-tech methods.
