January Art Highlights

Through 1/20- JANE BLOODGOOD-ABRAMS, ROBERT GOLDSTROM, HARRY ORLYK, LEIGH PALMER, AND LAURA VON ROSK at Carrie Haddad Gallery, Hudson—This exhibit seems to be generally inspired by a pastoral naturalism, rich with earth and sky tones, but with unexpected twists in the familiar. Jane Bloodgood-Abrams hovers above her low-sky sunlit mystical river scenes, capturing moments that feel like the aftermath of or precursors to a storm. Robert Goldstrom’s eels, whales, and dusky humans are usually suspended in water with strong blues and oranges, suggesting a strangely revealing inertia. Harry Orlyk brings a broad-stroked Impressionism to what would appear to be more mundane farm and field subjects, but his deft use of contrast, color and light elevate them to a humble majesty. Leigh Palmer’s distant views feel like low-flying flights, where the sky demands your attention despite the panoramic view, while Laura Von Rosk creates more stylized vignettes that seem to fold in upon themselves, using natural icons of trees, water, and rock. . . though from a place not quite of this earth. Carrie Haddad Gallery starts a new exhibition with Richard Hennessey, Betsy Weis, Vicki Wolf, and Donise English on Jan. 24, with reception Saturday Jan. 26, from 6-8 PM. Carrie Haddad Gallery, 622 Warren St., Hudson, www.carriehaddadgallery.com, 518.828.1915. Open daily (except We) 11 AM- 5 PM.

1/19 through 3/30- “MADE IN WOODSTOCK IV” and “SHADOWS” at Center for Photography at Woodstock—
“MADE IN WOODSTOCK” is a biennial exhibition at CPW featuring works by recent participants of Woodstock A-I-R, CPW’s residency program for artists of color working in the photographic arts, featuring Deborah Bay, Margarida Correia, Isaac Diggs, Isabelle Lumpkin, Marlo Marrero, Natasha Moustache, Xaviera Simmons, Rishi Singhal, Kwabena Slaughter, Toshi Ueshina, Preston Wadley, and Vagner Whitehead. The solo exhibition is “SHADOWS,” works by Catskill photographer Jared Handelsman, featuring large-scale photograms and video work, haunting images of night shadows exposed by headlight beams, moonlight, and flashlights. Reception for both shows is Sa 1/19, 5-7 PM. Center for Photography at Woodstock, 59 Tinker St., Woodstock, www.cpw.org, 845.679.9957

1/19 through 2/17- “DRAWING REVEALED” at the Garrison Art Center, Garrison NY—Traditionally, drawing has been a preliminary process in the development of fully-realized artistic works. Some artists, however, view drawing as a potential final product instead of a means to an end. Featured artists: Laura Battle, Nancy Bauch, Jaq Belcher, Ula Einstein, Alexis Elton, Thomas Huber, Ken Landauer, Jeesoo Lee, Charlotte Schulz, Craig Shannon, and Stan Stroh. A 30 minute documentary video of artists in their studios accompanies the exhibit, which encompasses a wide (and unusual) variety of approaches to the act of drawing. Reception Sa 1/19, 5-7 PM. Garrison Art Center, 23 Garrison’s Landing, www.garrisonartcenter.org, 845.424.3960
