Veering and careening between Iggy Pop and a junkie opera
soprano, vocalist/lyricist Michael Wiener exhibits little
inhibition (or Western tonality for that matter) while self-consciously
rhyming over well-constructed musical vignettes supplied
by keyboardist/guitarist/producer Jim Coleman, drummer/guitarist
(and Beacon resident) Phil Puleo, Fender Rhodes-ist John
Anderson, and bassist John Nowlin. While the lyrics seem
superimposed at times, the music of NYC’s The Children,
with its old-school synthetics blending dynamically with
fuzz bass and compressed drums, keeps you tuned in. One song
ends with Wiener sotto voce: “I implore you to ignore.” Sure
ya do.
