The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) will present Why New Forms?, a Curatorial Conference organized on the occasion of CCS Bard’s 20th anniversary year and taking place at the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College and organized by CCS Bard alumni/ae Dan Byers, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, and Ruba Katrib, Curator of the SculptureCenter in New York City.
Why New Forms? will address a selection of timely issues with the history of CCS Bard’s curatorial education as a backdrop. Organized around specific exhibitions, publications, and organizations as models, the Conference brings together important recent projects that are grounded in the creative use or repurposing of existing structures and conventional idioms, yet still retain a productive – or at least dynamic – relationship to institutions.
There will be four panel discussions over the two days of the Conference, featuring a diverse range of important voices in contemporary curating that will coincide with the opening of CCS Bard’s major summer exhibitions:
From 199A to 199B : Liam Gillick, A survey of Gillick’s work from the early 1990s that pushed for a new awareness of how art institutions function curated by CCS Bard Executive Director, Tom Eccles. Anti-Establishment, a group exhibition curated by Johanna Burton, CCS Bard Graduate Program Director, featuring the work of Wynne Greenwood, Trajal Harrell, H.E.N.S. (Arlen Austin & Jason Boughton), Jacqueline Humphries, Brennan Gerard & Ryan Kelly, Chelsea Knight (with Elise Rasmussen), Pam Lins, Scott Lyall, Tere O’Connor, Mai-Thu Perret, Sarah Pierce, Elisabeth Subrin, and YES! Association.

10:30am – 12:00pm: “The Political in Exhibitions”
Moderated by Independent Curator Chen Tamir, this panel will address the contexts of curating political exhibitions.
Suzanne Cotter, Curator of the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation; Mai Abu ElDahab, Freelance Curator; and Peter Eleey, Curator at MoMA P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center.
1:00pm – 3:30pm: “Case Studies”
Moderated by Independent Curator Fionn Meade, this panel will take a close look at the recent examples of reenergized classical exhibition formats, including the thematic group exhibition, the solo show, and the biennial.

Moderated by Dan Byers, this panel will reflect upon the curatorial within publications, websites, and libraries — once supporting entities to exhibitions, which have now become sites for some of the most interesting curatorial thinking today.

11:30am – 1:00pm: “The New Alternative”
Moderated by Ruba Katrib, this panel will consider institutional models formerly considered outside of progressive curatorial consideration – such as the commercial gallery, private collection, and donor-run organization – as locations for present day experimentation and scholarship.

CCS Bard’s Why New Forms? Curatorial Conference will take place at the Bertelsmann Campus Center at Bard College, located in the center of the Bard campus, and a five minute walk from the Hessel Museum of Art.
The Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (CCS Bard) is an exhibition, education, and research center dedicated to the study of art and curatorial practices from the 1960s to the present day.
In addition to the CCS Bard Galleries and Hessel Museum of Art, the Center houses the Marieluise Hessel Collection, as well as an extensive library and curatorial archives that are accessible to the public. The exhibition program and the Hessel Collection also serve as the basis for a wide range of public programs and activities exploring art and its role in contemporary society.
