Music
Highlights
Willie
Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price at Bethel Woods—The Last
of the Breed tour, indeed. Between the classic sound of Ray Price,
whose “Crazy Arms” in 1956 brought a new strong rhythmic
sound to country (even getting a beat named after him,) and the
true “Poet of the Common Man,” Merle Haggard, who shows
no sign of slowing down or backing off (even after forty #1 hits,
and every possible award in the biz,) this is already the country
show of the summer. But then there’s Willie: quite possibly
the most beloved elder statesman country music can offer...only
the most jaded IRS agent-fromhell would say otherwise. Altogether
the best of the Texas/Nashville axis, and songwriter heaven. Bethel
Woods Center for the Arts, 200 Hurd Rd., Bethel NY, www.bethelwoodslive.org,

Against
Me! at the Chance Theater—After 3 well-received releases,
and rampant world-wide touring, Gainesville Florida’s own
Against Me! fi nally takes the major-label plunge with the semi-ironic
title of New Wave (Sire,) produced by the legendary Butch Vig (Nirvana,
Garbage.) Notorious for their passionate delivery and audience response,
they look to be rocking the Chance, just after shows at the Leeds
and Reading festivals in the U.K. The Chance Theater, 6 Crannell
