Fr-Su 4/25 through 4/27- A MIDSUMMER’S NIGHT DREAM by Catskill Ballet Theatre, at Ulster Performing Arts Center, Kingston—Thanks to a $60,000 donation by Accord’s Peter and Judith Hauser, a new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic “A Midsummer’s Night Dream,” has been commissioned for the Catskill Ballet Theatre, choreographed by noted New York City-based choreographer Davis Robertson, a former dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, and utilizing the timeless music of Felix Mendelssohn. Many of the younger dancers come from the Kingston-based Anne Hebard School of Ballet, however, the principal dancers will be professionals from the New York City dance community. Th-Su 5/1 through 5/11- THE BREAD AND PUPPET THEATER at Time and Space Limited, Hudson—The Bread and Puppet Theater, founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann, is one of the oldest, nonprofit, self-supporting theatrical companies in this country, and is bringing its politically charged, raucous, and artful performances to TSL. “The Divine Reality Comedy Circus” (Sa/Su) features the Grand Forgiveness Society of Glover, VT, the triumph of the small farmer, advice on where to get really cheap drinking water, a celebratory ballet by a flock of roosters, the Rotten Idea Theater Company’s distillation of political issues and much more, all accompanied by the Bread & Puppet Circus Band. The decidedly less family-friendly “Photographs of My Corpse: A Puppet Service for Guantanamo” (Th/Fr) utilizes the texts of actual interrogation documents, and an inmate’s poem. A small papier-mache population first re-enacts the interrogation process, and then witnesses three cases of torture on three oversized puppets.
